How to Get the Most Out of Personal Training

So you’ve decided to invest in a personal trainer—now what?

Hiring a coach is a big step toward your health and fitness goals. But just showing up isn’t the full story. If you really want to make the most of it, there are a few simple ways to get even more out of your sessions and the support that comes with them.

1. Communicate Openly

Your trainer isn’t a mind-reader. Be honest about how you’re feeling—physically and mentally. Tired? Sore? Stressed? Let them know. The more info we have, the better we can tailor things to fit your day and your goals.

2. Show Up Consistently

Progress doesn’t come from one perfect session. It comes from showing up, even on the days you don’t feel 100%. You don’t need to crush every workout—you just need to keep putting in the reps.

3. Trust the Process

Every program has a purpose. You might not always understand why you're doing a certain movement or pace—but your coach does. Trust the structure and give it time. Results follow consistency.

4. Ask Questions

Don’t just go through the motions. If you're curious about an exercise or want to learn more about your plan, ask! The more you understand the “why” behind the work, the more connected and motivated you’ll feel.

5. Do the Work Outside the Session

You get 2-3 hours a week with your trainer. What you do with the other 165 matters. Prioritize sleep, stay hydrated, get your steps in, and make balanced choices when you can. These basics go a long way.

6. Celebrate the Small Wins

Personal training is about more than just chasing a number on the scale. Stronger lifts, better energy, more confidence—those are all wins. Acknowledge them. They matter.

The Bottom Line

Working with a trainer gives you structure, accountability, and expert guidance—but the effort and attitude you bring to the table matters just as much.

Show up. Stay consistent. Stay curious.
You’ll be surprised by how far you can go.
